A Simple Guide to Creating Your Sacred Space
A sacred space is any place you intentionally create or designate to connect more deeply with yourself, the divine, or even the present moment. It’s a sanctuary- whether physical or energetic- where you can pause, breathe, and return to your center. This space is meant to nourish your spirit, inspire clarity, and offer a sense of refuge from the noise of daily life.
Sacred spaces don’t need to look any specific way. They can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish. What makes a space sacred isn’t how it appears, but the purpose and energy behind it.
Intention
As with many things, intention guides all of the other aspects of the creation of your sacred space. Take several breaths and tune into yourself. Then ask yourself: what is my intention for this space that I am creating for myself?
You might consider a space that helps you to:
- Enhance creativity
- Connect with God/Source/Universe (or whatever you believe in)
- Self-healing
- Be present with what is
- To remember your innate wholeness
- To simply have a retreat from the chaos of the world
You may choose any combination of the above or something else entirely.
There are infinite possibilities here for you. You can decide what your intention is for the space and this intention will inform every decision you make hereafter.
Location
Sacred spaces can take many forms. For some people, libraries, forests, bodies of water and gardens are sacred spaces. However, depending on the intention you set, you may decide that the best place to create your space is inside your home. You may dedicate a small corner of a room, an entire room, or your whole home as your sanctuary.
The important part is that you choose your location with intention. You don’t need a big area or a specific aesthetic- just a place where your energy can be held and renewed.
Clear the Energy
Physically cleaning the dust and dirt from the area is a powerful first step. This begins to move energy and create clarity. From there, you can continue to shift stagnant or heavy energy using tools like:
- Sound healing instruments (singing bowls, chimes, bells)
- Smudging with sage, palo santo or other sacred herbs
- Diffusing essential oils
- Lighting candles or incense
Clearing energy invites freshness, presence, and possibility.
Decorating the Space
Bring beauty and meaning into your space. This is a deeply personal step. You may prefer a minimalist environment with only a few select objects or you may feel drawn to ornate decor.
Consider incorporating items that reflect your intention:
- Crystals
- Sacred texts or oracle cards
- Artwork or statues
- Fresh flowers
- Journals
- Sound healing instruments
You might also choose specific clothing and jewelry to wear in your space- items that help signal to your body and mind that you are entering sacred space.
Tending the Temple
Like any relationship, your sacred space thrives with regular care and presence. Make it a habit to refresh the space often. Dust, cleanse, and rearrange to your heart’s content! Notice when the energy feels off and respond with love.
Your sacred space is just that- yours. It doesn’t need to be large, elaborate or expensive. What matters most is the energy and intention you bring to it. Even the smallest nook can become a powerful sanctuary for transformation, healing, peace, and connection.
