Zen Bell: Waking Up
Waking up in the morning at my meditation retreat in the lush pine forests of the Colorado Rockies, I would gently come back into an awake yet alert state of being with a soft ding resonating in the distance. We each had roles, cooking, cleaning, and setting the table for our meals.
The most salient and serene moment that still rings in my mind to this day is the sound of the zen bell. The morning chime felt as if it were sent from the divine itself. This gentle sound would awaken anyone in its vicinity with a gentle, spacious ring.
The zen bell is perfect for waking up, whether that be you, your kids, or your meditation sangha. These bells have traditionally been used in Tibetan Buddhist practices to mark the beginning and end of meditation sessions. With their clear and resonant tones, zen bells are believed to purify the environment, dispel negative energies, and create a sacred space conducive to meditation and prayer. They serve as a simple focal point, giving the mind a place to rest.
